Most house clearance work in Tottenham arrives in one of two shapes. November 2017. The clearance itself went through. The problem came afterwards, and it was ours. The customer had been told she would get three on the crew and a brush-through at the end, and she got neither as written. She wrote to us about it, and the letter did two jobs at once. On the men who turned up: "I was very impressed to the two guys that you sent out to clear the property, they were both polite and very helpful". Then, on the rest of it: "I am in no way unhappy with the two members of staff that you sent – they were perfect gentlemen – but I am disappointed that I did not receive the complete service that was contained within your quote."
And she had done the sensible thing, which is the line that stuck with us:
"I did take several photographs of the property when I went back and if you would like to see these, then I am happy to forward them on for your consideration."
She was right, and we said so. That is a fair message and it deserves a fair answer — we would far rather read it than find a silent one-star review three weeks later. What it changed on our side was small but permanent: the crew size and whether a sweep-through is included now get said out loud on the call, not buried in an email, and if the second man is off sick the customer hears it that morning rather than working it out from the doorstep.
Two days and a garage in N12
March 2023, and a very different day. A three-bedroom house with a garage in N12, up at the North Finchley end. It was booked over the phone and then confirmed in writing, which is how we like it — the customer read back the address, the date, the size of the property and the outside areas, and replied: "I accept the booking and the infomation in your email is correct."
Nine o'clock start, both days. Three-bed houses with a garage rarely finish inside one, and this one didn't: it ran to three runs out to the transfer station across two days, with the team back on site at nine the second morning. Out of it came an upright fridge freezer, three mattresses, and three upholstered items that had to be logged separately and sent down their own route. The garage was the usual story — a door that has not been fully open in years, and behind it paint tins, garden tools, boxes of things that went in "for now" some time around the last move.
Nobody made a comment about any of it. Nobody photographed anything. That matters more to people than the furniture does.
