26 clearances have landed in Somerset postcodes. The county runs from the Mendips down to Exmoor and out to the Levels, and the difference between those is the difference between a morning and a day.
Levels, hills and the coast
The Levels — Glastonbury, Street, Bridgwater and the villages between — are flat, easy to work in and full of long-occupancy houses with sheds and outbuildings. What slows a day there is volume, not access.
The Mendip and Exmoor sides are the opposite. Frome, Shepton Mallet, Wells and the villages above them sit on hills with lanes that were laid out for carts. Minehead and Dulverton are a proper drive from anywhere.
Taunton, Yeovil and the towns along the A303 are the busiest and the most ordinary: house sales, probate through solicitors, and completion dates that do not move.
Local authority reorganisation matters here more than most places — the old district councils are gone and Somerset Council handles waste across the county now, which changes which rules apply where, and confuses plenty of people who have not moved house in twenty years.
