Most of the house clearance in Brixton we get called out to is flats. Conversions off Acre Lane, ex-council maisonettes, big blocks up on Brixton Hill. And the first thing we ask about on the phone is the stairs. A three-bedroom flat clearance in SW2 in the summer of 2025 shows the shape of it well enough.
The enquiry came through on 14 July, the date was fixed for Friday 1 August. The instruction was short: all rooms cleared. The person arranging it lived over towards Kennington and the Oval, in SE11. Carpets and curtains asked about and answered. There was old food sat in the fridge and the chance of cat mess in the flat. We were told that up front, which is what we want: decaying food and animal mess put a job into what the trade calls a verminous clearance, and the crew turns up kitted for it rather than discovering it at nine in the morning.
Under the line asking what was to be left, the sheet carried one instruction, typed in capitals: "PHOTO ALBUMS IF ANY ARE FOUND." The team looked as they went, found some, and left them out on the kitchen worktop. Everything else came out.
That is the usual shape of probate work in this part of south London. Somebody at a distance, a written scope, and a set of keys.
What came out and where it went
Beds and mattresses, white goods, household furniture, boxes of kitchen things, and whatever has collected in a loft or an outside cupboard. Garage and loft clearance is a booking in its own right here as well. Another SW2 clearance, instructed by a national property firm working out of Cambridgeshire, came off in a single load and had a mattress, a fridge freezer and an upholstered item in it. Three things that each go their own way once they are on the van.
Anything still usable we offer round to a reuse project or a charity shop that will take furniture. South London is well served for that and it saves a load being burnt for nothing. Metal, wood, cardboard and electricals get split at our end. Whatever is genuinely spent goes into a permitted transfer station and comes back to us as a weighed ticket. Tins of paint, thinners, gas canisters and anything else flagged as hazardous are a separate arrangement. They cannot ride in with the sofas.
