House clearance in Northwood — Middlesex, before the county went — is rarely a whole house from the off. Not much of a house is genuinely rubbish. If a thing still works and somebody would want it, it goes to a charity depot or a reuse scheme rather than in the back of the tipper — furniture, crockery, tools, books, unopened bedding. The scrap metal and the white goods get separated off and go for processing. Wood, cardboard and paper are baled. Sofas, armchairs and footstools are treated as POP items. The flame-retardant foam in them cannot be mixed in with general waste any more, so those go off on their own ticket to a plant licensed to burn them properly. They are kept apart from the rest of the load because the rules say they have to be. What genuinely cannot be reused or recycled is weighed in at a permitted transfer station and written down.
There are a few things that cannot travel in a mixed load at all. Half-used tins of paint, gas canisters, solvents, oil, asbestos sheeting from an old garage roof — those need a separate route and, in some cases, a specialist. Say so when you ring. It is not a problem, but it is a problem if it turns up as a surprise at nine in the morning.
