Most house clearance in Northampton reaches us as a phone call, a postcode starting NN and a date somebody else has already fixed — a completion, a tenancy ending, a solicitor's timetable. Now and then it arrives differently.
The farmhouse out at West Haddon, NN6, came into our inbox as a set of emails, one per room, with photographs. That is unusual and it made the job far easier. The ironing board and iron were moved, not binned. A large metal trunk, same. Half the cardboard boxes turned out to be empty. The owners had thought about those too: "Again, many of the boxes are empty, so they’re just to be collapsed for recycling and taken away please." The crew flattened them on the spot and out they went for recycling, rather than filling the van with air.
That December we worked the house across separate days rather than forcing it into one, and the dates moved twice while the owners decided what they were keeping. The outbuildings stayed out of it at their request: "Can you get us a quote for the house clearance and clean first, please? We will work out what we want to keep from the outbuildings, later this week, and can get that quoted for seperately." Two fridges never made it onto our list either, because neighbours had already taken them. That is a normal thing on a farm lane. Not everything is a farm. Where a load goes after it leaves
Furniture and household goods still in usable condition go to a charity or a reuse outfit wherever one will take them, and the neighbours who took the two fridges at West Haddon achieved the same thing without us. Everything else is weighed in at a permitted transfer station and comes back with paperwork. Upholstered furniture is the one that catches people out. Sofas, armchairs, dining chairs with padded seats, footstools and most cushions contain flame retardants classed as persistent organic pollutants, and since 2023 they have had to be kept out of the mixed load and sent for incineration rather than landfill. That is the law rather than a preference of ours, and it is why the crew will ask you whether a chair is padded before it goes on.
