We have been doing house clearance work since 2007, and Milton Keynes is a city we are in most weeks of the year. The MK6 flat, and how far away the keys usually are
A flat clearance in MK6, over on the Springfield and Netherfield side of the city, went through in February 2019. One load, plus a fridge freezer that had to be logged and handled separately from the general waste. The instructions came from Cambridgeshire that time, and the person paying had never met the crew who did the work. They wrote afterwards: "Many thanks for your help in clearing the flat – the boys were very helpful and thorough."
We do not need you standing in the hallway all day. Somebody has to let us in, that is all, and a managing agent, a neighbour with a spare set or a keysafe on the wall works just the same. Plenty of clearances run entirely off a code and a written note about which door to lock on the way out. What leaves the property, and where it actually goes
Anything still usable we push towards a second life first — a charity shop, a furniture reuse scheme, someone who wants a working washing machine more than the tip does. Sofas, tables, crockery, tools, garden furniture. It is not a gesture, it genuinely keeps the load down. What is left is weighed in at a licensed transfer station and the transfer notes are kept. If a solicitor or a landlord asks where the contents of a house in Wolverton ended up, there is a paper answer rather than a shrug. Some items sit outside a normal load. Fridges and freezers count as hazardous since the coolant rules changed, so each one is booked in and processed on its own — the small under-counter sort, the tall upright, the American double-door. Mattresses go down their own route as well. Padded furniture — armchairs, sofas, office chairs — is separated out under the POPs regulations, persistent organic pollutants, the old flame retardants in the filling, and that stream is incinerated under permit instead of tipped. Not our rule, and no way around it. Grid roads, garages and the parking question
Milton Keynes is easier to work in than most cities we cover, and the reason is dull: the roads were built for vehicles that size. Off the grid roads there is nearly always a drive, a garage court or a verge to back onto, and a Luton in a Bletchley cul-de-sac causes nobody any grief. The estates put up in the seventies and eighties — Stacey Bushes, Fishermead, Netherfield, Beanhill — tend to have integral garages and lofts stuffed to the felt. That is where the extra loads come from, not the living room.
Where it gets tighter is the older centres the new city grew around. Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell have terraces on narrow high streets with no off-street parking at all, and Olney, out towards the Ouse, is much the same. If a neighbour is willing to hold the space in front of the house for the morning, that alone can save the crew a fifty-metre carry with every wardrobe. We reach the city off the M1 at junctions 13 and 14. Milton Keynes Central puts the whole West Coast route within reach if a family member is coming down for the day. Where the clearance follows a death the invoice can go to the executors, the solicitor handling the estate or the administrator of the estate — paid from the estate, in other words, rather than out of a relative's own pocket.
Full houses, and things that must not go
Some properties have forty years in them and nobody has thrown anything away since the eighties. The more delicate part is usually the opposite: what has to survive the clearance. Ask the family for a list before we start and you will get one. Paperwork and photographs, a ring that has gone missing, tools somebody was promised, the boxes of a collection in the corner of a front room that mean nothing to us and everything to them. Whatever is on the list gets pinned up in the hall and worked through room by room. Write yours down and send it over before the day, because a box in a loft looks the same as every other box until somebody tells us otherwise. Gas cookers we leave unless a Gas Safe engineer has capped the supply, and anything wired in stays put for the same reason.
