The piano was the first thing we were told about. That is often how a house clearance on the Wirral begins — not with the furniture and not with the loft, but with the one object that decides how the whole day will run. A three-bed semi with a garage over in Pensby, CH61, February 2022. The booking note said it plainly enough: "Upright piano, ground floor living room."
An upright standing in a front room off a hallway with a turn in it means two of the lads on it and nothing else moving until it is out and on the tailboard. So we put it first, while everyone is fresh, rather than last when they are not. Moving one on its own is a job in itself — see piano removal. The person arranging that one was not on the Wirral at all. An executor, handling the estate from the Isle of Man, doing the whole thing by email and one phone call. Two family members met us at the door to point out what was staying. The booking note had said "Any items to be left will be indicated on the day", which is how most probate work goes: nobody really knows until they are standing in the room with the drawer open.
