One that stuck in the memory was a three-bedroom house cleared on a Friday morning in August 2022. It started as a phone call, went quiet for a day, and came back as a short email that opened with a line you do not often get: "Thank you so much for running through how this all works with me yesterday." Then, plainly: "Please could we go ahead and book Friday 19th August for the clearance?"
So we booked it. Booking confirmed for the Friday, team to meet the customer at the property for 9am. That one sentence does more for a clearance than any amount of chat on the phone. It tells the crew leader three things before the van is loaded. Inside only, no outbuildings to swallow the afternoon, and a family who had already been through the place and taken out what they were keeping. A house that has been sorted still takes a day, mind. Sorting is not the same as emptying, and the things people leave to last. The wardrobe that will not come apart, the chest freezer, the boxes at the back of the cupboard under the stairs. Are exactly the things that need three of us and a proper run to the van.
The form also asks whether there is or has been any case of COVID at the property and whether anyone attending is self-isolating. In August 2022 that was still a live question and the answer came back straight: "No Covid symptoms at property or anyone attending". We stopped asking eventually, but for a couple of years it decided whether a crew went in at all.
The customer was there on the day to open up and to instruct the team, which is always the easier way round. What we cannot take on a house clearance in Ayr, and why
Bottled gas, gas heaters, half-used tins of paint, aerosols, car batteries — none of that can legally travel mixed in with a household load. It is not us being awkward. Each of those has its own disposal route and its own paperwork, so it is handled separately from the general load and it has to be declared before the day rather than discovered on it.
Fridges and freezers are the same. Ayr splits neatly at the river for our purposes. South of it, KA7 covers the Georgian and Victorian terraces around Bellevue Crescent, Racecourse Road and Carrick Road, the big villas out towards Alloway and Doonfoot, and the seafront flats looking over the Low Green. Those Racecourse Road houses are handsome and awkward in equal measure — three storeys, a basement kitchen that hasn't been touched since the seventies, and a staircase that turns twice on the way down. North of the river is KA8: Newton-on-Ayr, Wallacetown, Whitletts, Craigie, Dalmilling.
