One of ours that sticks in the memory wasn't a house at all. The customer had also said, honestly enough, "There may be other smaller removal boxes", and there were. One load did it. Four mattresses came off that job, and mattresses never travel with the general waste — the fire-retardant foam in them has its own regulated route, so they were kept apart from the first lift.
The date had already moved once at the customer's asking, from one week to the next, which is no trouble at all. What did go wrong was the morning itself: nobody was there to meet us and the unit stayed shut. It happens, and it's the reason we now ring the day before rather than the week before. The studio conversion out at Eaglesham
Closer to home, and squarely in G76, we cleared a studio conversion out at Eaglesham with a mezzanine over it and a separate garage a few steps away. Both the mezzanine and the garage were being used purely for storage, which is usually the sign of a house that's been standing a while — this one had been empty since the April. The person instructing us was doing it from the other side of the country, on the east coast, on behalf of a relative, and had gone through the estate agents beforehand to work out what was staying.
That list mattered more than the clearance did. Curtains stayed. White goods stayed. The fridge freezer stayed. And the piano stayed — which surprises people, because a piano is normally the first thing we're asked about, not the last. Carpets were a maybe until the morning. No cleaning wanted, no garden work wanted. A ten o'clock start rather than our usual nine, and somebody there to open up and point at things.
Parking was the only open question, because the building sits back off the main street through the village. In the end the van went on the road and everything came out on foot, which for a studio and a garage is no hardship at all. It's worth saying that the further into East Renfrewshire you go — Waterfoot, Eaglesham, out towards Uplawmoor — the older and more awkward the buildings get, and the more it pays to tell us in advance where a Luton van can actually stand.

A few categories are handled apart from the general load. Fridges and freezers go for degassing rather than crushing. Mattresses and padded furniture are kept separate because of the foam in them. Anything falling under the POP rules — sofas, armchairs, padded dining chairs — has to be kept out of the recycling stream entirely and destroyed by an approved route, which is law rather than preference.

Paint is the standard one. Paint, aerosols, gas bottles and anything chemical need a separate route through the council's own facility, so tell us they're there and we'll say plainly whether we can help or whether it's a trip you'll have to make yourself. Same goes for asbestos sheeting in an old garage roof, which we won't touch, and for anything that turns out to be hazardous or verminous once the door is open.
The other thing we'd rather be straight about is time. A four-bedroom house with three public rooms, a loft, a garage and a garden shed is a two-day job, and we'd far rather tell you that at the quote than at four o'clock on the first afternoon.
Executors, solicitors and estates
A good number of the properties we empty in this corner of Scotland are being dealt with by someone who lives nowhere near them. Everything of obvious value is set aside and pointed out rather than quietly loaded.
