House clearance in Port Talbot is mostly terraces, post-war semis and the odd flat over a shop — south Wales coast, West Glamorgan as it was — and the day nearly always turns on two things: what is staying, and where the van can stand. One sentence, and the whole morning changes. Masks and gloves rather than bare hands. Cardboard that has been sitting in damp gets bagged rather than flattened for the recycling, and nothing that has been in contact with mould goes near the reuse pile. It is spoiled, whatever it was worth when it was new. He confirmed there was nothing verminous in there, which is a different problem again and one we would want flagged well in advance.
The rest was straightforward. "Yes, all for disposal thanks," he said, so nothing was being held back for family or for storage. One large wooden sofa was to be left exactly where it stood. There was a paint tin, which cannot travel in an ordinary house load, and one upholstered item that had to go down the controlled route. Loading was into limited-time bays, so the team worked in stages instead of standing the van outside all day. He was not going to leave a written schedule of what stayed, either: "Yes, I've outlined them previously and can instruct on the day." He was there, he pointed, it went. One load out and the place was empty by the afternoon.

Half of any clearance is knowing what to leave alone. Curtains, blinds and light fittings usually stay. So does the fitted bedroom furniture and anything built in — the washing machine and the fridge freezer plumbed in under a worktop, more often than not. There was loft space above the kitchen to empty and a shed on the driveway. That He remembered to add by email a few days before we came. He was instructing the whole thing from another county and could not be there, so a relative who lived five minutes' walk away came down at half eight to open up. Parking was the driveway itself, double yellows directly outside and no restriction at all on the opposite side of the road — the sort of detail that saves the team twenty minutes of hunting when they arrive. The lads finished after the office had shut, so the paperwork went out the following morning with the completion photographs attached to it.

Bigger jobs, more than one day
Not everything fits in a single van load and we would rather say so up front than dribble it out later. A house that has had forty years of the same family in it. With A packed loft and a garage nobody has opened since the mower stopped working, is a two-day job and we will book it as a two-day job. Mattresses, a fridge freezer, a chest freezer in the garage — each of those has to be handled on its own terms, so they set the shape of the day as much as the furniture does.
