A house clearance in Loughborough usually starts with somebody holding a set of keys they never expected to be holding. An executor. He typed his answers in black underneath each of ours, so nothing was left to memory. Size of property and outside areas: a four-bedroom house including the garden and the garage. Then he came back a second time with the ones he had missed, and wrote:
"Apologies for not having answered all questions in my previous email. See responses in black below."
I quote that on purpose, because it is the least glamorous sentence a customer has ever sent us and it is the one that made the day work. A written scope is the best predictor there is of a clearance finishing when we said it would. The team turns up knowing there is a garage to do as well as the house, knowing the garden is in, knowing nobody is going to open a door onto a surprise. He was the contact on the day himself, which is the other half of it — somebody on site with the authority to answer, so when the lads reach a cupboard nobody mentioned, that takes ten seconds instead of two days.
It came out as one load. A mattress went off separately, as mattresses have to; they are not general household waste and they travel their own route to their own facility.
