House clearance in Hinckley is rarely the dramatic sort. It's a flat clearance on a first floor that has to be empty by the end of the month, a bungalow in Burbage where somebody has already spent a fortnight sorting through drawers, a family who want the heavy end taken away and the rest left exactly where it stands. Small jobs, careful ones. That's the ordinary shape of the work here, and it's what most of this page is about.
One of ours was arranged not by a family at all but by a managing agent working from an office a long way from the property. A second house clearance: one day, two loads
Another that ran the same way, again instructed at a distance by an agent rather than by anyone living in the house. That one didn't fit in a single load. The team came back the same day for a second, which is common enough when a property has been lived in for a long time and nothing has left it for a decade. There was a mattress on that job as well, handled on its own for the same reason. The invoice went out on paper, in an envelope, posted to a company office rather than emailed — which tells you something about how that end of the trade still works, and why we keep copies of everything.

Where we work from and what we cover
Hinckley sits in the far south-west corner of Leicestershire, right up against the Warwickshire boundary, and the town's own postcode district is LE10, and that is what this page is about. Housing here is mixed in a way that matters on the day. Terraced streets close to the town centre, where the front door opens more or less onto the pavement and a wardrobe has to come out at an angle. Post-war estates out towards Hollycroft, and the newer estates at Sketchley, Wykin and Middlefield, where the drives are short but there's usually somewhere sensible to stand a Luton. What leaves the house and where it ends up
Furniture that somebody else could still use gets offered on — the East Midlands has a decent network of furniture projects and charity warehouses, and a sound three-piece suite or a solid oak dresser is worth a phone call before it's worth a van. Metal is separated. Electricals go to WEEE. Fridges and freezers are hazardous waste under the regulations, so they're pulled off separately and handled by a permitted site, whether it's an undercounter one from a Hinckley flat clearance or a chest freezer out of a village garage.

A fair share of a house clearance in Hinckley is never in the house at all. It's the garage, the shed and the loft. Booking forms often say "loft contents unknown", which is an honest answer and a common one — plenty of people arranging a clearance have never been up the ladder themselves, and we'd far rather be told that than be told the loft is empty and find forty years of it up there.

Probate, executors and who pays
