Eight clearances have landed in Herefordshire postcodes. It is one of the least densely populated counties in England, and the practical fact is distance: a cottage down a lane outside Ledbury is a planned trip rather than a call-out, and we would rather say so than promise a van is ten minutes away.
Black and white houses, and orchards
The old stock here is timber-framed — the black-and-white villages towards the Welsh border — with low doorways, uneven floors and staircases that were not built with a wardrobe in mind. Much of it is listed, which limits what can be taken off a door frame to get something out.
The Wye valley and the orchards around Ledbury and Bromyard are smallholdings: houses with barns, sheds and outbuildings that hold more than the house does.
Hereford itself is ordinary town work with somewhere to put the van.
