Most of the house clearance work we do in Hereford is arranged by somebody who is not standing in the house, and often not in the county at all. A house in Tupsley, on the east side of the city in HR1. Four mattresses came out of it. Four — which tells you the place had been a family house for a long time and then one person's house for longer. Plus a fridge freezer, plus enough furniture and boxed-up belongings that the first van was loaded out and a second load went the same day rather than the team coming back on another morning. It was booked through a firm of solicitors acting for the estate, which is how a good half of our probate work in this county arrives. Nobody from the family was on site. Nobody needed to be.
That is roughly what a Hereford house clearance looks like when it is done properly. No relative standing in the hall apologising for the state of the loft. One day if the job allows it, and a house handed back swept and empty. We have been doing this since 2007.
A house clearance that took two days, not one
Not every job fits in a day, and we would far rather say so before you commit than have you find out at four o'clock on the first afternoon. One of ours was assessed off photographs as three loads and one to two days, and it turned out to be exactly that. Two days. The shed was in the scope and so were the carpets. Carpet is always the thing that turns a comfortable day into a long one. It comes up heavy, it comes up in strips, and it fills a van a great deal faster than furniture does.
What came out of it: an upright fridge freezer and a smaller under-counter one, both of which go off on the regulated route to be degassed under permit. A mattress; three televisions and monitors; and six pieces of upholstered furniture, which since 2023 have to be separated out under the POPs rules and cannot travel in a mixed load at all. The rest was ordinary household — the contents of a house that had been shut up for a while.
The customer was nowhere near the property. The team kept the keys between the two days, with permission given over the phone, photographed the finished rooms and emailed the lot through. Two lines from the correspondence at the end of it say more about how these jobs actually run than anything I could write:
"The keys have been put back through the letterbox as you requested."
"The boxes have your photo albums in them"
That second line is the one that matters. Somebody sorting out a house from two hundred miles away cannot come and go through the drawers themselves, so anything that looks like it belongs to a life rather than to a tip. Albums, loose photographs, papers, the contents of a bedside drawer — gets boxed up and left in the house, not thrown. If you tell us where to leave it, that is where it will be.
Probate house clearance in Hereford

Landlords and managing agents ring us at the end of a tenancy when somebody has gone and left half a household behind. Same job, tighter clock: the property usually needs to be empty and clean for a check-out or a re-let, so the clearance and the clean get done in the same visit wherever the volume allows it.
What we do with what comes out
Furniture and household goods that somebody else could still use are offered on to charity shops and reuse schemes rather than tipped, and Herefordshire has a decent number of them across the city and the market towns. Things that cannot go on the van
There are a few. Some properties are simply very full. Rooms with a path through them, wardrobes shut on more than they were built to hold, a loft that has not been opened in years.
