Sheds are full of the things nobody wanted in the house.
We asked what we ask everybody before a date goes in the diary: whether there were hazardous or verminous contents anywhere in the property. Decaying food, animal mess, anything that changes the kit and the number of people we send — and, this being 2022, whether anyone attending the property was self-isolating or showing symptoms. Those are not box-ticking questions. The answers decide what goes on the van and who is on the team.
Access on the day was arranged the way it usually is with a family rather than an agent. A relative would be at the property with the keys to let the team in and to say what went, and possibly the person who had booked it as well. Nobody had to travel down and sit there for eight hours.
What our records show is a house emptied in one day, with a second load taken out the same afternoon instead of a return trip the following morning. Which is exactly what the photographs had been for. A mattress went out on its own route, because mattresses cannot be tipped in with general waste and have to be taken apart for recycling by somebody set up to do it. Everything else went through regulated recycling and disposal, with the paperwork to match.
Nothing about that day was unusual, and that is rather the point.
