One of the more useful clearances to describe is one where the customer never met us at all. The property stood at one address, and the person arranging it lived at another a fair drive away, with no appetite for making that journey twice to stand about in an empty hallway. It came out as a single van load. Two things had to be handled away from the rest. A mattress, which cannot go into a mixed load at all, so it was taken off for shredding on its own. Anyone who lives here already knows the problem. The old quarter behind the Back Beach and up around the Triangle is narrow, one-way in places, and lined both sides. The Regency terraces facing the Den have no off-street parking at all, and the hill roads climbing up towards Higher Woodway are tight enough that a Luton box van needs a bit of thought about which end to come in from.

What is genuinely finished goes through a permitted transfer station for sorting, and the tickets come back with the driver, so there is a paper trail for every load. Some things we simply cannot put in a mixed load. Tins of paint, gas bottles, old solvents and garden chemicals all need their own route. Devon County Council runs the household waste recycling centre out at Forches Cross near Newton Abbot for exactly that sort of thing, or we can arrange a separate collection if there is a lot of it. Ask before the day and it is a five-minute conversation instead of an awkward one at ten in the morning.
Upholstered furniture is its own category now. Sofas, armchairs and other domestic seating count as POP waste, which stands for persistent organic pollutants, and since 2023 they cannot be tipped with general household waste at all. The padding goes off to a permitted incinerator on its own. Televisions and monitors go down the electrical route, fridges and freezers down the degassing route, and mattresses off for shredding.
