On a street where you are shuttling from a bay two houses down, the same four-bed takes noticeably longer, and the team knows before it sets off which sort of day it is in for. That one went out over two loads on the same day — a four-bed with a garage rarely fits in one — and the upright fridge-freezer and the mattress travelled on their own routes rather than in the general load. No pianos, as promised. When there is one, it is a different job and a different set of hands; we do piano removal as its own visit.
Where the load actually goes
Bretton, Werrington, Orton, Dogsthorpe, Paston, Stanground, Hampton — the houses differ but the sorting does not. Furniture that is sound, crockery, unopened bedding, tools, books: we would rather see it back in use, so decent items are offered on to reuse schemes and charity shops around the city before anything else happens to them. What is genuinely finished is weighed in at a permitted transfer station — the sort of yard that sits on the industrial edges of the city, Fengate way — and the paperwork comes back with it. Fridges and freezers are a separate matter. They are classed as hazardous because of the gas in them, so an under-counter one, a tall upright and a chest freezer all go to a facility set up to degas them. Mattresses go their own way for a plainer reason: springs and foam have to be separated, and the sites take them item by item, so a mattress is never simply thrown on top of everything else. Paint tins, gas bottles, canisters, fire extinguishers, car tyres, televisions and monitors — all liftable, none of them allowed to travel mixed in with the sofas. The council, and what it will and will not take
Peterborough City Council runs the kerbside collections and the household recycling centres in the city, and its bulky waste service will take a limited number of items — some people get a couple of things away that way before we arrive, which is fine by us.
