Nine clearances have landed in Powys postcodes. Powys is the largest county in Wales and the emptiest: mid-Wales, hills, single-track lanes and villages a long way from anywhere.
We are straight about the distance rather than pretending a van is nearby. A Powys clearance is planned as a trip with a date agreed in advance, and on one job here the van was collected from West Bromwich the day before to make the start time work. That is what getting a team and the right vehicle into mid-Wales actually takes.
Older names survive here too — Brecknockshire, Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire were the three counties merged into Powys in 1974, and people still use them.
Stone, farms and chapels
The stock is stone-built: farmhouses with barns and steadings, chapels converted into homes, and terraces in Welshpool, Newtown and Llandrindod Wells. Low doorways, thick walls, stairs that turn twice.
Outbuildings hold more than the houses, and often have done for a century.
Wales has its own waste rules
Wales separates household waste more strictly than England, which changes how a load is sorted before it goes anywhere. We plan for that rather than discovering it at the gate.
