We have been clearing houses since 2007, and Witney is one of the towns our vans turn up in most weeks. Landlords and managing agents ring us between tenancies, usually with a deadline attached. Flats above the shops on the High Street and around Market Square, the newer blocks on the edge of the town, sheltered schemes with a warden and a lift that was not designed for a three-piece suite. We can clear the lot and sweep through, or take only what the outgoing tenant left. Access, parking and the awkward ones
Witney's older streets aren't generous. The terraces off Corn Street and the lanes running down towards the Windrush were laid out long before anybody imagined a Luton parked outside. The pinch points around Market Square and Church Green can turn a straightforward morning into a carrying job. We'd rather know in advance. If the van has to sit fifty yards away and everything gets walked out, that's fine. It just changes how the day runs, and we'd sooner tell you that on the phone than discover it at nine o'clock.
The estates north and east of the centre have the opposite issue: plenty of tarmac, but parking bays that belong to residents and a warden who takes an interest. If a bay needs holding for the day, tell us and we'll get there early. The old mill cottages down by the river are the tightest of all — a front door straight onto the pavement, a staircase that turns twice, and no back way in.
Barn conversions and farm outbuildings out towards Bampton and Burford bring the other problem again — all the room in the world to park, and then a hundred feet of gravel between the van and the door. Both are workable. Neither is a surprise if you mention it when you book.
Reuse first, tipping last
Everything that comes out gets sorted rather than tipped. Furniture, kitchenware, tools, books, unopened bedding. If it's still got use in it we'd sooner it went to a charity shop or a reuse project in the county than into a skip, and that's the first pass the team makes. What's genuinely finished with travels to a permitted transfer station and is weighed in under paperwork; the waste transfer notes come back to us and we forward them on if you want them for the estate file. Several clients have asked for exactly that, and it's never a problem.
Our waste carrier registration with the Environment Agency is CBDU419679. Household waste centres run by Oxfordshire County Council, including the site out past Stanton Harcourt, won't take a trade load without that registration, and West Oxfordshire District Council's own collections won't touch a house-clearance volume at all. It's worth knowing before anybody with an unmarked van offers to take a load off your hands — if it ends up in a gateway on the Curbridge road, it's still your name on the paperwork inside it.
A few categories can't just be thrown in with the rest. Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating fall under the persistent organic pollutant rules, so upholstered seating goes off separately for incineration and can't travel mixed in with the rest of the load. Fridges and freezers have to be degassed before they're broken up, so they go a different route too. Tins of paint, gas cylinders, solvents, car batteries and anything similar need a hazardous route we're not licensed to carry in a mixed load. What a day on a Witney house clearance looks like
