The Becontree estate, and what it means
Much of this borough is the Becontree estate — one of the largest council estates ever built in Europe, put up in the 1920s and 30s to a handful of repeating designs. In clearance terms that is unusually helpful: the layouts repeat, the loft hatches are in the same place, and a quote from photographs is reliable in a way it rarely is elsewhere.
The houses have front gardens, side entries and somewhere to put a van. Volume sits in the loft, the shed and the garden rather than in the rooms.
Barking town centre and the riverside are newer and denser, with blocks that need a booked lift.
