Coast, coalfield and the towns
The East Neuk fishing villages — Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem — are old, stone-built and tightly packed, with pends and wynds instead of driveways and stairs that turn twice. What comes out of those houses comes out carefully.
The old coalfield towns — Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly, Kelty — are terraced and postwar, easier to work in, with long occupancies and full lofts.
Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and Dunfermline are ordinary town work with somewhere to put the van. St Andrews has the student turnover, so clearances there cluster around the university year.
