A house clearance in Uckfield in January 2020 was finished inside the day and then everybody waited a fortnight, and nobody minded. The property was in TN22. The crew emptied it across two van loads between the morning start and knocking-off time, and a mattress went out with the last of it. Anything still usable is worth a phone call before it is worth a tip run. Furniture in decent order, unopened kitchenware, clothing, books — we would rather see it go to a reuse project or a charity depot in the area than see it buried. Some days that adds an hour to the job. It is an hour well spent.
What is genuinely finished goes into a permitted waste transfer station, weighed in and recorded, with a waste transfer note behind it. Customers ask for copies of those notes now and again, particularly executors who need to show an estate what was done, and they are perfectly entitled to them. Upholstered furniture is its own business these days. Getting into Uckfield
The town sits on the A22 between East Grinstead and Eastbourne, which is how most of our vans come in, and the A26 drops down from it towards Lewes. Uckfield railway station is the end of the line — the branch from Oxted runs down through Edenbridge Town, Eridge, Crowborough and Buxted, and stops here. It used to carry on to Lewes and hasn't done since the sixties. Diesel the whole way, two carriages more often than not.
None of which matters to a house clearance except in one respect: the High Street. It climbs, it narrows, and the older properties along the top of it have no parking to speak of. Wealden District Council handles the bins here; the household recycling site is over on Bellbrook Industrial Estate and is run by the county. Neither of those is any use for a full house, which is the point at which people ring us.

Probate work is a good half of what we do, and the money side of it is simpler than people expect.
We invoice the solicitor, the executor, the administrator where there was no will, or the estate directly — whoever is actually handling it. Certain things simply cannot travel with everything else. Paint, gas cylinders, garden chemicals, asbestos, sharps — those need their own arrangements, and it is far better to hear about them beforehand than to find them behind the shed door at half past two on a Friday.

None of that is complicated, but all of it is expensive in time if the crew finds out at eleven in the morning.
