House clearance – two fascinating finds
Posted on | May 7, 2010 | No Comments
It will hardly surprise you to hear that, as someone in the house-clearance industry, I’m interested in unusual finds during the process of clearing a property.
I wrote some days ago about the secret document revealing the unpleasant dining habits of Hitler that was found during a house clearance in south-west England. I’ll get back to the Fuhrer in a minute, but first I want to tell you about a nice discovery made during a clearance at a house in Stourbridge.
Stourbridge clearance turns up a classic
The item was found under a pile of bin bags and boxes in a garage. And what was it? A Jensen 451, no less, a classic car from 1956. Only 500 of them were made, so it’s quite a find. The cars were built in West Bromwich and the Jensen 451 became something of an icon in British car engineering. The car had all-round disc brakes and the body panels used glass fibre and polyester resin.
The Stourbridge car had not been driven for around 40 years. It’s to go under the hammer at a Stourbridge auction house – Fieldings Auctioneers, Mill Race Lane – next Saturday, 8th May.
In perfect condition, it’s estimated that it would go for about £30,000 at auction.
Shropshire clearance recalls a monster
OK, back to Hitler who, fortunately, had been put of commission a decade before the Jensen 451 was born.
During a house clearance in Shropshire, a voting slip from the 1932 German election was discovered.
So what, you might say, but what’s interesting is that this was one of a series of elections in Germany whereby Hitler took power and began his mad and murderous career.
What is more, the voting slip – which states at the top “Parliament for Freedom and Peace” and includes the name of the constituency, Hessen Nassau – has an ‘X’ beside Hitler’s name.
Such voting cards are very rare and you’d wonder how one of them ended up in a house in Shropshire. It’s going to be sold by Mullock’s auction house in Ludlow, Shropshire on 27th May. The expected price? Around £70.
Auctioneer Richard Westwood-Brookes commented: “This is a marvellous piece of 20th century history bearing the name of one the world’s most notorious dictators.”
I know … from a Jensen 451 to a German voting slip is quite a leap, but that’s one of the joys of house clearance – you never know what you might find.
